President's September 2006 Message

Dear fellow FDA members,

It's hard for me to believe that my year as FDA president is over. However, FNCE in Hawaii was a wonderful way to wrap up the year. It was great to see so many Florida dietitians there and many in leadership roles. Thanks to Judy Rodriguez, PhD, RD and Joyce Gilbert, PhD, RD, who are both serving on the ADA BOD for their countless hours of work on our behalf. Thanks also to our delegates, Gail Kauwell, PhD, RD and Sheah Rarback, MS, RD who represented us so ably at the House of Delegates meeting. Also, Clara Lawhead, MS, RD and Gail Kauwell, PhD, RD were speakers at FNCE. Florida is so proud of our ADA officers, delegates, and speakers!

On the home front, here's the latest FDA news….

  • Molly Gladding, RD, LD/N incoming FDA president will be leading the BOD and AC meetings next month in Orlando at the Renaissance Resort at SeaWorld, a potential FDA annual meeting facility. We look forward to seeing all of our Administrative Council, Committee Chairs, and Board of Directors members there.
  • Carole Mackey, RD, LD/N and Nadine Pazder, RD, LD/N represented FDA at the 21st Century Seniors Summit held at Hillsborough Community College Sept 8th, 2006.
  • Plans are well underway for the 2007 FDA annual meeting at the Marco Island Marriott Resort, July 8-11th. A very exciting keynote speaker has been signed. Look for information on the FDA web site shortly at www.eatrightflorida.org.
  • Mary Herrstrom, RD, LD/N is working on another FDA membership survey. Look for details on how to fill out the survey on the website shortly and on the list serv.
  • The Dietetics and Nutrition Practice Council will be meeting in Tallahassee, Oct 4, Chris Stapell MS, RD will attend.
  • Congratulations to FDA Administrative Assistant Jacque Rudd, now Jacque Mitchell on her recent marriage!!
  • The diet manual reviewer contract was awarded to the nutrition faculty at UNF. They will be working with members to keep the online and print versions of our Manual up to date.
  • Look for information on nominations for the FDA Distinguished Member Awards from John Wills, LD/N next month.
  • FDA lobbyist Sandy Woodruff, MS, RD attended the first in a series of regional workshops to address the 2008 -2010 state plan for elder care. She had very positive responses to her comments.
  • Susan McDonald, RD, LD/N hosted a mini internship for Senator Gwen Margolis at the University of Miami to learn more about the importance of nutrition in the care of Cystic Fibrosis patients. Nancy Newkirk, RD, LD/N also hosted a similar internship at the University of South Florida for Representative Ronald Reagan. Both legislators are planning to reintroduce a Cystic Fibrosis bill in the 2007 session. This type of member involvement is critical to our advocacy efforts.
  • Don't forget, if you missed our annual meeting in Orlando, you can still purchase individual sessions as well as our entire annual meeting on CD. Look for easy instructions on how to purchase on the FDA website www.eatrightflorida.org
  • And, if you missed the FDA soft briefcase and cube sale at the annual symposium you can still order them through FDA HQ. These make great gifts for speakers at your meetings or for the officers in your district associations.
  • Now, you can receive free CPE's on the FDA website. FDA is teaming up with 7 Pediatric Pulmonary Centers to provide 4 web-based case studies designed to help health care providers interact with clients and families in culturally competent ways. These studies will be available as a member benefit to FDA members. Non members will be able to access them for a fee. Information is on the FDA website at www.eatrightflorida.org.

It has truly been an honor and a privilege to be your President this past year. I want to thank the members of my Board for serving with me, Molly Gladding, RD, LD/N, Joy Chambers, RD, LD/N, Holly Adams, RD, LD/N, Sheah Rarback, MS, RD, LD/N, Regan Zayas, RD, LD/N, and Mary Herrstrom, RD, LD/N.
