President's December 2006 Message

Happy Holidays to all of our FDA Members,

I don't know where all of the time goes. The good news is that we are out of Hurricane Season and were successful at willing all of the storms away from our fair state. My wish for each of you is that you are able to enjoy the holidays with family and friends and that the New Year brings you nothing but health, happiness and joy.

Things slow down a bit for FDA this time of year but there are still a number of things happening on behalf of our membership and our profession.

  • Thank you to all of you who took a few minutes to participate in our annual membership survey. It is still up on the website if you haven't participated. It will be coming down shortly and the results will be summarized and shared.
  • We recently signed a contract with Professional Development Resources out of Jacksonville. PDResources provides a wide range of continuing education opportunities. There will be a 10% discount for any course ordered through our website.
  • While you are on the website take some time to view the November Focus. There is important information from our Delegates Sheah Rarback and Gail Kauwell as well as several interesting articles. Thank you to Joan Williams and Brenda Marty-Jimenez for such a professional publication.
  • The ADA ballot information was recently released and we are pleased to see that our own Leslene Gordon of the Tampa Dietetic Association has been nominated to serve on the ADA Nominating Committee. Please watch for information on ADA voting and be sure to support Leslene.
  • The FDA Nominating Committee under the direction of Cindy Kepler and the Awards Committee under John Wills have been busy working on the FDA ballot. This information will also be out after the first of the year.
  • Jo Ann Donnelly attended the Women's Health Strategic Planning meeting in Orlando on behalf of FDA. The purpose of this group is to identify strategies, action steps, timelines and key partners necessary to develop a comprehensive Women's Health Plan for the State of Florida. Jo Ann reports that the group realized that they need to expand to additional partners, and she feels that there will be many more opportunities in the future for FDA and the districts to be involved.
  • Plans are underway for our next Legislative Workshop in Tallahassee. Toni Martin is spearheading this initiative. Additional information will be available soon. Sandy Woodruff, Chris Stapell, Lucille Beseler and I had a conference call last week with the Washington ADA Office about state legislative activities. Juliana Smith, ADA's state legislative liaison, will be addressing the District Presidents in July.
  • Stephanie Norris recently arranged a dairy farm tour for several of our media representatives. Tara Gidus, Sheah Rarback, Susan Burke, Jon Vredenburg, Susan Mitchell and Nadine Pazder were all able to attend.
  • Order forms for the FDA Manual of Medical Nutrition Therapy 2007 edition are available at the Florida Diet Manual. Individuals and organizations who currently use either the online version or the intranet version will automatically receive the updates as long as their subscriptions are paid up.
  • Work continues on the revised FDA Strategic Plan. The Board of Directors will meet in January to finalize the initial draft. Watch for more information later that month.
Once again, I would like to wish you all a wonderful holiday season. Thank you for all that you do for our profession. FDA is an organization to truly be proud of.
