President's August 2006 Message
Dear fellow FDA members,
It's now early September and Labor Day weekend
is behind us. We're almost to fall even though
the thermometer says it's too hot and the leaves
aren't red, orange, or yellow. However, many FDA
members are currently packing their colorful Hawaiian
shirts to go to Honolulu for the ADA Annual Food
and Nutrition Conference and Exhibits. FDA leadership
will be represented in Hawaii by me, Molly Gladding
RD (incoming President), Lucille Beseler MS, RD
(Incoming President Elect) and our delegates,
Sheah Rarback MS, RD and Gail Kauwell PhD, RD.
Meanwhile, here are some of the FDA happenings
from August.
-
The
FDA Fiscal Affairs Committee met in Tallahassee
on August 30, 2006 to plan and approve our budget
for fiscal year 2006-2007. Thank you to Holly
Adams for her hard word as treasurer getting
the budget done before we arrived and to Clara
Augustine who always makes homemade treats for
breakfast and lunch.
-
Speaking
of recipes, FDA is working with Judy Cooper
MS, MBA, RD and Penny Levy MPH, RD, CDE to produce
"What the Experts Eat", a cookbook
full of Florida RD's recipes. Get a free cookbook
when it's published in exchange for your favorite
recipe. Half the proceeds for the cookbook sales
will be contributed to FDAF. So, send your favorite
healthy recipes to Judy Cooper and Penny Levy
for the What the Experts Eat Cookbook. veggegrl@bellsouth.net

FDA
Headquarters moved successfully in mid August
with apologies for interrupted phone service.
Even though the move was not far in distance,
it was down a flight of stairs and up another
one and it took quite awhile to get up and running
again. The new offices are great and thanks
to our FDA staff who have made them very organized
and efficient already!
-
Congratulations
to Ruby Puckett RD who was the recipient of
the Dietary Managers Association Highest Award,
"The Distinguished Service Award for Outstanding
Service to the Dietary Managers Association
2006". It was presented at the annual meeting
awards night banquet in Milwaukee in late July.
-
Thanks
to ECDA members who helped with the Florida
Medical Association annual meeting Sept 1 &
2nd at the Gaylord Palms in Orlando. They provided
information to the physicians attending about
RD’s and what nutrition services we have to
offer.
-
Former
President Gayle Dietz MS, RD and Member at Large
Mary Herrstrom RD continue to send welcome letters
to new Florida RD's. Twenty-four letters were
sent this past month welcoming them and inviting
them to join our association
-
Congratulations
to Tara Gidus RD, Cynthia Sass RD and Lisa Dorfman
RD on becoming Certified Specialists in Sports
Dietetics. There are only 58 dietitians in the
nation who have earned this important new credential!
-
Congratulations
to our FDA-ADA Foundation Scholarship Recipients:

Remember
if you missed it, you can still purchase individual
sessions as well as our entire annual meeting
on CD. Look for easy instructions on how to
purchase on the FDA website www.eatrightflorida.org.
-
We
are awaiting news on FDA nominations to the
State Employee Wellness Council. FDA nominated
Janet Brill RD, Flo Davis RD, Gayle Dietz RD,
Rachel Chambers RD and Shelia Dean RD.
-
We
are also awaiting news on the new consumer member
of the Dietetics and Nutrition Practice Council.
FDA submitted a nomination and we hope to hear
about this appointment soon.
-
If
you missed the FDA soft briefcase and cube sale
at the annual symposium you can still order
them through FDA HQ. These make great gifts
for speakers at your meetings or for the officers
in your district associations.
-
Soon
you can receive free CPE's on the FDA website.
FDA is teaming up with 7 Pediatric Pulmonary
Centers to provide 4 web-based case studies
designed to help health care providers interact
with clients and families in culturally competent
ways. These studies will be available as a member
benefit to FDA members. Non members will be
able to access them for a fee. Look for information
on the FDA website shortly.
As always, let me know if you have issues, questions,
comments, or concerns. I love hearing from you.
Aloha for this month!
